Message Unit 1 - an example of patriotized history

The US had been acting behind the scenes to make Indonesia's political history what it was. The US supported and helped to lead a violent rebellion in 1957 and 1958 (while denying that it was doing so), successfully pressured Indonesia to "postpone" its 1959 elections (thus ending Indonesia's free elections for forty years), and conspired with the killers (including supplying a list of names of top political leaders to be killed) in the great political cleansing of 1965 in which hundreds of thousands of Indonesian communists and their friends were killed as the country was cleansed of leftism, and supported the murderous Suharto dictatorship for the next three decades.
Omission of the US's central role in creating Indonesia's undemocratic history.
