Message Unit 1 - an example of patriotized history

The strife in Iraq is caused by the foreign conqueror that is trying to kill the citizens who won't submit.
The strife in Iraq is caused by Iraqis who don't get along with each other.

text:

That it was, remarkably, agreed to by all three ethnic and religious factions raises hopes

Message Unit 2 - an example of patriotized history

The US presence in and control of Iraq is itself an act of violence, and has been accomplished by massive violence.
The US has been trying to bring peace to Iraq and now the Arab countries are helping.

text:

Almost as heartening, it came as the result of the most constructive and successful effort so far by Iraq's Arab neighbors to assume some responsibility for guiding Iraq toward a peaceful political settlement.

Message Unit 3 - an example of patriotized history

It is quite possible (some would say definitionally required) for a peaceful settlement to include the failure of the aggression.
The definition of a peaceful political settlement in Iraq is the success of the US project.

Almost as heartening, it came as the result of the most constructive and successful effort so far by Iraq's Arab neighbors to assume some responsibility for guiding Iraq toward a peaceful political settlement.

Message Unit 4 - an example of patriotized history

Since the US project for Iraq is unprovoked aggression and foreign control, the UN charter says the Arab countries have an obligation not to support it.
The Arab countries have a moral obligation to support the US project for Iraq.

Message Unit 5 - an example of patriotized history

Many Shiites want the US to leave immediately. Many have said so. Many Shiites have fought for this goal against the US, and have been killed for it. This text is using a patriotized definition of the word Shiites, meaning those Shiites who have agreed to work with the US.
Sunnis want the US to leave soon, but Shiites generally want the US to stay while.

text:

And finally, it filled in no specific dates for the desired timetable, thereby bridging the gap between Sunnis, who favor an early pullout, and Shiites, who want to see any American withdrawal tightly linked to the achievement of clear security milestones, including the recruitment and training of capable Iraqi security forces.

Message Unit 6 - an example of patriotized history

The goal is Iraqi insecurity. The goal here referrred to as "Iraqi security" is increasing the power of Iraqis whose job is to kill nonsubmitting Iraqis for the foreign power that controls them.
The goal is Iraqi security.

Message Unit 7 - an example of patriotized history

The US doesn't plan to give up control of Iraq, only to pull back its troops while retaining control.
The US plans to eventually give up control of Iraq.

Message Unit 8 - an example of patriotized history

It is dictatorial of the Americans to stay.

Imagine what we would have thought, in 1990-1991, if the New York Times editorial page had said: "This page has not supported a precipitous Iraqi troop withdrawal from Kuwait based on an arbitrary Iraqi timetable."
It would be dictatorial of the Americans to leave too soon.

text:

This page has not supported a precipitous United States troop withdrawal from Iraq based on an arbitrary American timetable.

Message Unit 9 - an example of patriotized history

What the Americans are trying to do is get the Iraqis to do is kill Iraqis for the Americans, the opposite of Iraqi security.
What the Americans are trying to do is get the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own security.

text:

We have encouraged Iraqis to recognize the need for speedy, measurable progress in taking control of their own security, and for a spirit of constructive compromise in agreeing on constitutional amendments to guarantee democracy, human rights and national inclusiveness.

At least some Iraqi leaders now seem to be moving in that direction.

Message Unit 10 - an example of patriotized history

It is the Americans who are ruling the Iraqis and killing them in huge number, a fairly significant violation of their human rights.
The Iraqis need to learn to be more democratic and to respect human rights!
