Message Unit 1 - an example of patriotized morality

Ordinarily, there is no universal assumption that the aggressor's project must succeed.
US troops can't leave Iraq until the US project succeeds.

text:

"Attacking those patriotic Americans who have raised serious questions about the case the Bush administration made to take our country to war does not provide us a plan for success that will bring our troops home," Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the minority leader, said in a statement.

Message Unit 2 - an example of patriotized morality

Ordinarily, the main negative issue is the harm to the people being attacked, not to the attacker's side.
The main negative issue of the Iraq war is the pain it causes to American troops.

text:

"Attacking those patriotic Americans who have raised serious questions about the case the Bush administration made to take our country to war does not provide us a plan for success that will bring our troops home," Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the minority leader, said in a statement.

Message Unit 3 - an example of patriotized morality

Ordinarily, we don't take it for granted that people who think something is unjust want it to succeed. This is, of course, because ordinarily the issue is the injustice to the victims of the aggression, not to the aggressor's troops. It would be insanity to say that the crime is bad because it's not succeeding (as this text does) if the crime were thought of as a crime to the people of the country that was attacked. But when America goes to war any issue of crime is the issue of crime to the US soldiers, not to the people of other countries that they are ruling and, if unsubmitting, openly trying their best to kill.
We critics who question whether it was justified want the US project for Iraq to succeed, of course.

Message Unit 4 - an example of patriotized history

Killing "insurgents" is increasing the death toll.
Killing "insurgents" is the opposite of increasing the death toll.

text:

The rising death toll and the difficulty American and Iraqi forces have had in containing the insurgency have depressed public support for the war.

Message Unit 5 - an example of patriotized history

The "Iraqi forces" are controlled by a foreign ruler; the "insurgents" are Iraqis who are not.
The "Iraqi forces" are Iraqi forces; the "insurgents" are not.

The rising death toll and the difficulty American and Iraqi forces have had in containing the insurgency have depressed public support for the war.

Message Unit 6 - an example of patriotized history

The US has made progress at getting what the US wants for Iraq.
Iraq has made progress at getting what Iraq wants for Iraq.

text:

"By any standard or precedent of history, Iraq had made incredible political progress - from tyranny to liberation to national elections to the ratification of a constitution - in the space of two and a half years," he [Bush] said

Message Unit 7 - an example of patriotized history

The US has brought US tyranny to Iraq.
The US has brought freedom and democracy to Iraq.

text:

"from tyranny to liberation to national elections to the ratification of a constitution"

Message Unit 8 - an example of patriotized history

Only after Iraq was conquered by a foreign power did some Iraqis fight back against that foreigner and the Iraqis who work for it.
Some people rebelled against the Iraqi government and had to be put down by Iraqi troops.

text:

At the same time, he [Bush] said, Iraqi troops are showing increased ability to battle the insurgency.

Message Unit 9 - an example of patriotized history

The US is driving out independent, Iraqi-controlled Iraqi forces and replacing them with US-controlled Iraqi forces.
The US is driving out non-Iraqi forces and turning control over to Iraqis.

text:

"Our strategy is to clear, hold and build," Mr. Bush said, referring to the military tactic of sweeping suspected insurgents from towns and cities, leaving Iraqi forces behind to keep the insurgents from re-establishing a foothold, and then creating political institutions that can sustain a stable peace.
