Greece, 1947-1949, 1967-1974
Greek Left had led the resistance against Nazis while Greek monarchy and military had collaborated with Nazis. After the war, USG supported former Nazi collaborators against Greek Left, and civil war broke out. [Stalin did not help Greek Left, since he had made a deal with Churchill that he wouldn't.] USG wrote a request for help from Greece to the USG, and informed Greek govt that Greek govt would deliver the request. Totalitarian state then set up under USG guidance with former Nazi collaborators in leadership. Ideological thought control was key. Killings, parades with heads of Leftists on poles, reeducation camps with extensive use of torture and brainwashing, island internment camps with horrendous conditions, etc.
1967 coup in Greece reinstituted terror conditions, with torture, rape, beatings, mass imprisonments. CIA support for the terror regime was certain and massive. CIA involvement in the coup was also very likely. One of those imprisoned was future Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, later head of the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Party. (Wittner, Lawrence S. 1982.
