Three Key Points On Bulgaria's Role in Today's US-Dominated World
Apparently the USG did not pay too much attention to Bulgaria until 1989. Then it worked hard to bring Bulgaria into line with Washington's agenda. This agenda appears to consist of 3 main points, all of which appear to be progressing successfully:
-
The US wants Bulgaria to be a US client state militarily
It's a strategically important place:
 |
| The Black Sea region provides excellent power projection toward the heart of the Greater Middle East (roughly the area between Morocco and Pakistan). It is also the region which connects the Caspian Sea oil- and gas-rich zone with the eastern Mediterranean Sea, an area of crucial importance for the European Union's energy needs. |

Bulgaria joined NATO, houses US troops, and participated in the US invasion of Iraq.
-
The US seems to want Bulgaria to be a client state economically
Bulgaria has apparently borrowed billions from private US banks and US-controlled institutions like the IMF. It has sold some of its public infrastructure to private US companies.
The standard of living of the poor and average Bulgarian has apparently plummeted since 1990.
 |
| In Bulgaria, for instance, the percentage of people below the poverty line rose from 2% in 1987 to 33% in 1994-5 |

The US may want to use Bulgaria to reduce the likelihood of the European Union becoming a viable rival to the US
Bulgaria became a member of the EU. With some of its puppet masters in Washington, this helps Washington quell the potential for EU emerging as a rival to the US.
 |
| At the same time, Western Europe will hastily become aware that integrating southeastern and Balkan countries will likely produce a further advancement of pro-Atlantic, pro-U.S. European factions and will undermine any attempt to build an autonomous E.U. power. |
